✶ THE EMERALD ODYSSEY

I spent 5 days in Enshi: no wild men, but I stumbled into China's "Wizard of Oz"

A private journey · No join-in groups · Your own guide, your own rhythm
Enshi Grand Canyon aerial view
🇦🇺 Why Enshi? Honestly, before coming to China I had never heard of "Enshi". One day I was scrolling YouTube and saw a video: a boat floating on turquoise water, towering cliffs on both sides — it looked like a movie set. I commented "Where is this?" Someone replied: "Hubei Enshi." I Googled it, and the mountain photos didn't look real — too green, too vertical. So I booked a flight. I found an agency called A Bin Travel. Their rule is simple: no group sharing, no car sharing. Just you and a private guide. My guide's name is A Bin. He wasn't born in Enshi, but he has lived here for many years — knows every trail, every hidden restaurant, and the best times to avoid crowds. He smiles a lot and climbs way faster than me. And he serves only me (or your own party). No strangers in the car, no waiting for others.
⛰️ Day 1 · First taste of Tujia culture
Yichang → Enshi · Tusi Imperial City & Nu'er City
Tusi City wooden architecture
Morning bullet train from Yichang to Enshi (~2h). A Bin picked me up at the station with a handwritten sign — old school but it felt safe and personal. His white SUV, just the two of us. First stop: Tusi Imperial City. A Bin explained: "This was like the king's palace of the Tujia people back in the day." The wooden Jiujin Hall climbs layer by layer, each courtyard higher than the last. At the top bell tower I rang the bell three times; A Bin said each ring brings peace. In the evening: Nu'er City (Grace City). A Bin warned me: "They might pull you on stage for a duet." I laughed. And yes — a Tujia girl grabbed my hand and asked me to sing. I panicked and sang "You are my sunshine". Everyone cheered. A Bin filmed the whole thing. Then we had Tujia hanging pot stew — smoked ribs, local potatoes, tofu, mountain vegetables, and a lot of chilies. Sweating but couldn't stop eating. Because it was only us, I ate slowly, no rush.
我慌了,唱了句"You are my sunshine",所有人都欢呼。

🥾 Day 2 · Enshi Grand Canyon — 28,000 steps of wonder
Qixingzhai (One Incense Pillar) + Yunlong Ground Fissure
Yunlong Ground Fissure waterfall
Left at 7am sharp. A Bin said: "Your pace, your rules — we stop when you want." Qixingzhai is a maze of karst peaks. The highlight is the "One Incense Stick" — a 150m-tall stone pillar that's only 4m wide at its thinnest point. "It's stood here for 100 million years," A Bin told me. I just stared at it for a long time. Then came the cliffside plank road — a narrow path bolted onto a vertical cliff. I'm a bit scared of heights, so I focused on A Bin's backpack and followed his steps. He walked calmly, occasionally naming the distant peaks. Afternoon: Yunlong Ground Fissure. You descend over 100 meters into the earth, and suddenly it's cool and misty. Waterfalls crash from both sides. A Bin explained it was an ancient underground river that collapsed eons ago. We walked slowly for about 1.5 hours, stopping whenever I wanted to catch a rainbow behind a waterfall. No other tourists pushing from behind — just the sound of water and my own footsteps. Back in town my legs were shaking. A Bin took me for a foot massage. The masseuse said my calves were rock hard. A Bin laughed: "He walked 28,000 steps today."
🕯️ Day 3 · Cave giants & ancient seabed
Tenglong Cave (Asia's largest) + Suobuya Stone Forest
Morning: Tenglong Cave. The entrance is so huge that a helicopter could fly inside. Inside it's around 12°C year-round — glad A Bin told me to bring a jacket. We walked past underground rivers and massive stalactites. There's a laser light show projected on the cave ceiling, telling a Tujia legend, followed by a live ethnic dance performance inside a natural limestone hall. The acoustics were better than some concert halls I've been to. Afternoon: Suobuya Stone Forest — a 460-million-year-old seabed. A Bin pointed out fossilized shells and corals on the rocks. I couldn't believe it: I was standing on an ancient ocean floor. The stone shapes are bizarre — mushrooms, lotuses, alien faces. The narrowest passage is called "Thread of Sky"; I had to turn sideways to squeeze through. A Bin walked fast and I panted trying to keep up. But because we had no group, he found a quiet corner where I sat for ten minutes, listening to the wind whistle through the stone gaps. Pure silence.

🚢 Day 4 · Floating on the jade river
Qingjiang River cruise · Butterfly Cliff · Zero walking
Butterfly Cliff
Finally a day without a single step of hiking. We arrived at Qingjiang Pier at 8am and boarded a two-level boat. I rushed to the top deck. The water was so green — emerald, jade, unreal — I thought someone had added food coloring. The mountains on both sides unfolded like giant screens, layer after layer. About an hour later the boat stopped in front of Butterfly Cliff — two cliffs shaped like butterfly wings with a waterfall plunging exactly in the middle. I must have taken over a hundred photos. A Bin handed me his power bank (he always carries spare batteries and snacks). We sat on the deck drinking Enshi selenium tea, and he told me stories of swimming in this river when he first moved to Enshi years ago. That afternoon felt like a dream: warm sun, cool breeze, nothing but green water and blue sky. No phones, no rush. Just the sound of the wake.
☕ Day 5 · Slow morning & farewell
Free time · Enshi Museum · Local breakfast
Enshi museum artifacts
No alarm. I slept in until 9, then wandered to Enshi Prefecture Museum (free entry — A Bin's recommendation). I saw real Tujia wedding costumes, intricate brocade, and silver ornaments. At noon, A Bin picked me up and took me to a tiny local shop for a bowl of Enshi Doupi. Here's the thing: doupi literally means "bean skin", but it's not tofu — it's a chewy noodle made from rice, served with minced pork, pickled beans, and a sprinkle of scallions. I asked A Bin why it's called bean skin. He thought for a second and laughed: "I have no idea, just eat it." It was delicious. After lunch he drove me to Enshi Xujiaping Airport. Before I got out of the car, he said: "Come back in winter. I'll show you the snow. Still just your group." I nodded. On the plane I scrolled through my photos: the One Incense Pillar, the ground fissure waterfalls, Butterfly Cliff, and the weird stone forest. I posted a WeChat moment: "Enshi has no wild men, but wilder mountains. A Bin Travel — just you and the green."

✨ Why "no join‑in, no car sharing"?
If you're like me — hate waiting for others to take photos, hate others waiting for you, want to set your own pace (fast or slow), and want to actually talk with a local guide rather than listen to a loudspeaker — then exclusive private guiding is the way. A Bin drives his own car, takes only you (or your own travel party). No strangers, no fixed schedules, no forced shopping stops. He handles all tickets, routes, and meals. And he's genuinely a good photographer. For travelers in their 20s and 30s, spending a bit more for freedom and privacy is 100% worth it. Every day felt like traveling with a friend who knows everything.
🎒 What to pack & local tips
✅ Bring: hiking shoes (absolutely no canvas sneakers), a light down jacket or windbreaker (Tenglong Cave and the Grand Canyon top are chilly even in summer), power bank (you'll shoot hundreds of photos), sunscreen and a hat.
❌ Skip: a large suitcase (mountain roads, a backpack or small roller is better), too much cash (WeChat Pay works everywhere — A Bin helps with everything).
📌 Food to try: Enshi small potatoes (taste like chestnuts), Tujia bacon, youcha (oil tea), and the dangerously spicy hanging pot stew. And Enshi Doupi.
You'll love Enshi if... you love impossibly green landscapes, you don't mind 20k steps a day, you want to try spicy and hearty Chinese food, you love taking photos that need zero editing (Enshi's colors are ridiculous), and you hate big tourist crowds.
Maybe not for you if... you really cannot hike at all (there are sedan chairs at the Grand Canyon, but they're pricey), or you despise any amount of chili (you can ask for non-spicy, but you'll miss half the soul of Tujia food).
