Three Days in Shennongjia: Sea of Clouds, Golden Snub-nosed Monkeys & Mirror Lakes
Why Shennongjia?
To be honest, I had never heard of "Shennongjia" before coming to China. When my Chinese friends learned I was going to Hubei, their eyes widened: "Shennongjia? The place with the wild man legend?" Wild man? That immediately grabbed my curiosity.
Later I found out that Shennongjia is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, known as the "roof of Central China" with its highest peak, Shennong Summit, rising over 3,100 meters. It’s not just about wild man tales — there are primeval forests, alpine wetlands, wild golden snub-nosed monkeys, and ancient altar culture. For someone who loves the outdoors and a hint of adventure, this was a dream destination.
My boyfriend Alex and I decided to go. Instead of a crowded bus tour, we booked a private guide named Abin, recommended by a friend. His service is strictly private — no carpooling, no strangers — just our own vehicle and flexible itinerary. That choice turned out to be the best decision of the entire trip.
Here’s our real three-day, two-night journey.
Day 1 · First Encounter: From City to Emerald Wonderland
7:30 Depart from Yichang
Yichang was still wrapped in morning mist when Abin picked us up at the hotel in a clean seven-seater van. Only the two of us, the space felt like a cozy mobile lounge. Though not a native of Shennongjia, Abin has been guiding there for years and knows every winding road and best photo time like the back of his hand. He speaks Mandarin with a slight Hubei accent and decent English. No scripted tour-guide talk — just like a friend sharing stories about wild man legends and his awe when he first entered the mountains.
As we left the city, the hills grew denser. After about 2.5 hours, the air smelled of wet earth and pine. We had arrived.
Stop 1: Guannenshan (Panda Pavilion & Cliff Beehives)
Guannenshan is like a condensed natural history museum. First, the giant pandas — more active than expected. One climbed trees, the other rolled with bamboo. Alex took about 200 photos. But what stunned me more were the beehives hanging on sheer cliffs. Abin explained that locals have raised bees in wooden barrels on hundred-meter-high cliffs for centuries, harvesting by free-climbing. Honey dripped like amber waterfalls. We bought a small jar of wild honey — later we mixed it with hot water at the hotel, and it had a faint herbal floral aroma, truly unique.
11:30 Shennong Altar – Blessing Ritual & Millennia-old Cedar
At Shennong Altar, dedicated to the legendary Yan Emperor, we climbed long stone stairs flanked by massive ox-horn totems. Abin taught us a simple blessing gesture: close your eyes, make a wish, and walk around the 1,200-year-old ironwood cedar. The tree was so thick that three people couldn’t wrap their arms around it. Touching its bark made me feel strangely peaceful.
16:30 Tiansheng Bridge Waterfall – Misty Twilight
A natural stone arch spans the gorge with a waterfall thundering below. The mist turned the canyon into an emerald dream. The best part was walking through a tunnel carved in the rock — dripping water, moss-covered walls, and hidden karst caves. We captured our favorite portrait of the trip: backlit silhouettes against the waterfall spray. Abin knew all the secret angles.
Evening We stayed at a cozy guesthouse in Muyu Town at the foot of the mountains, with a mountain-view window. Dinner at a local eatery: stir-fried smoked pork with bamboo shoots and clay-pot chicken. The golden chicken broth felt like pure energy for tomorrow’s hike.
Day 2 · Core Highlights: Shennong Peak + Dajiuhu Wetland
8:00 Shennong Peak – Chasing Clouds on the Roof of Central China
Abin drove up to about 2,800 meters and led us on a less crowded trail to the "Shennong Summit" monument. Thin air, breathtaking views with every turn. Because we had no other passengers, we could stop as long as we wanted.
Xiaolongtan (Golden Monkey Rescue Station) – Several Sichuan golden snub-nosed monkeys perched on branches, their blue faces and golden fur shining like silk in the sun. A baby monkey jumped close to the fence, tilting its head at my camera — heart melted.
Shennong Valley – Sea of clouds at its best. Light rain the night before gave us a magical morning: thick cloud cotton filling the valley, black mountain peaks floating like islands. Abin taught us to use panorama mode to capture the cloud "river".
Banbiyan (Slate Rock) – Eerie rock formations, looking like stones dropped by giants. According to Abin, this area has the highest frequency of "wild man" sightings. We spent nearly an hour here without any crowds rushing us.
15:00 Dajiuhu – “Hulunbuir of Hubei”
A chain of nine alpine lakes surrounded by meadows, more reminiscent of Switzerland than central China. We went to Lake 4-6 area. The highlight: feeding sika deer at the Deer Enclosure. A greedy deer kept nudging my waist with its nose while Alex laughed nonstop. At sunset, the lake turned peachy orange, and the deer moved slowly across the grassland — like a frame from an art-house film.
19:00 Sunset at Lake No.5 – Clouds obscured the final drop of the sun, but the sky shifted from fiery orange to violet, reflected perfectly in the water. Abin reminded us to bring jackets — temperatures drop fast after sunset.
Day 3 · Morning Mist and Return to Yichang
5:30 The golden morning mist at Lake No.2
The alarm felt brutal, but when we reached Lake No.2 just after 6 AM, all drowsiness evaporated. A thin layer of mist floated like milk over the water, willows barely emerging from the fog. Wild ducks swam silently, leaving fading trails. Light seeped from behind the ridges, painting the scene like a fantasy game. I sent a video to my mom — she thought it was CGI. It wasn’t.
8:00 Breakfast & Departure – After beef noodles in Pingqian ancient town, we drove back to Yichang (~4.5 hours). Abin played local folk songs and shared stories of past travelers. We passed by the Three Gorges Waterfall, but we were too tired to stop — maybe next time.
12:30 Back to Yichang city – Alex and I agreed: Shennongjia exceeded every expectation. It’s epic yet tender — feeding deer, drinking wild honey, eating home-cooked smoked pork. For young travelers (25-35), you don’t need to be a pro adventurer. Just wear good walking shoes and be willing to wake up early for the mist.
