I almost skipped Wudang.
It became my favorite place in China.

If it hadn’t been for a friend’s persistent recommendation, I would probably never have added Wudang Mountain to my China itinerary. While planning my first trip to China, social media was full of the Great Wall, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Shanghai, and Beijing — Wudang rarely appeared on any "must-visit" list. Honestly, I didn’t even know where it was. Then a friend who had traveled to China told me: “If you want to see more than just landscapes — if you want to truly understand Chinese culture — go to Wudang.” I was skeptical. Could a mountain famous for kung fu really be worth three full days? But three days later, as the high-speed train slowly pulled away from Shiyan, I realized I already missed it. Not because it has the most spectacular views in China, nor because of the 600-year-old palaces. But because it was the first place in China where I truly slowed down.

First stop, not the mountain, but a bowl of hot-dry noodles

This was my first time in Hubei Province. When I stepped out of Wudangshan high-speed rail station, a warm local guide named A Bin greeted us with a gentle smile. Instead of rushing into the itinerary, he simply said: "Let's grab something to eat first." That's how I tasted authentic hot-dry noodles (re gan mian). I studied the chopsticks and wondered if the sesame paste was a side dish. A Bin laughed and said, "Mix it all together." The first bite was completely unlike any noodle dish I'd imagined — rich sesame fragrance, silky noodles, and a subtle tang from pickled beans. For the next three days, I had a bowl every morning. Looking back, I don't remember much of that first car ride, but I'll never forget that taste of noodles.

Day 1: Beginning to understand Wudang

Many people head straight to the Golden Summit, but our first stop was Prince Slope (Taizipo). At first I was surprised — then I realized it was the perfect start. The silence was extraordinary. Wind brushing through the trees, occasional birdsong — almost no other sound. Oddly, there was no sign reminding visitors to be quiet, yet everyone instinctively lowered their voices. A Bin didn’t lecture nonstop; he was like a friend showing his hometown. Walking among the ancient buildings hugging the mountain contours, I noticed that nothing tries to reshape the land — it blends in. A Bin later mentioned: "Daoism follows nature." Those few words lingered in my mind.

“Some places don't need signs to remind you to be quiet. Because they themselves are quiet enough.”

In the afternoon we arrived at Purple Heaven Palace (Zixiao Gong). The air carried gentle incense smoke. I lifted my camera, then slowly put it down. Not because photos were forbidden, but because I suddenly felt that being present mattered more than capturing a picture. That night, opening the window of my room, the cool mountain air and distant insect chirping made me realize: a day with no rush can feel deeply fulfilling.

Day 2: Standing above the clouds

Taking the cable car up to the Golden Summit, the scenery kept changing — forests, cliffs, valleys, and ancient temples half-hidden in mist. When we reached the summit, the golden rooftop glittered under sunlight, with layer upon layer of distant mountains. I finally understood why the Chinese call it "fairy mountain." But what truly struck me was the weather. In a few minutes, a cloud drifted in and wrapped the entire summit in white. A local visitor smiled: "Don't worry. Wudang likes to tease travelers." Within two minutes, the breeze blew and the mist slowly dissolved, revealing the peaks again. I didn’t rush to photograph — I just sat by the railing, watching the ever-changing sea of clouds. Later, scrolling through my phone, I realized my favorite memory wasn't the best shot, but those twenty minutes of doing nothing at all.

“The best thing to do on the summit isn't taking photos — it's sitting down.”

Nanyan Palace & Xiaoyao Valley: The art of lingering

In the afternoon we visited Nanyan Palace, built on a precipitous cliff. The famous "Dragon Head Incense Burner" still makes you hold your breath. What’s truly admirable is that they never tried to conquer the mountain, but to coexist with it. On the third day, Xiaoyao Valley offered fewer grand halls, more streams, forests, and stone paths. I sat by the stream and did nothing for a long time. In the afternoon, we watched a Wudang martial arts demonstration. Unlike the fast-paced movie kung fu, the movements were slow yet full of power, as if talking to one's breath, body, and heart. That’s when it clicked: Wudang culture has survived for centuries not just because of martial arts, but because it invites you to slow down.

Why Wudang became my favorite place in China?

China has many spectacular places: Zhangjiajie, Guilin, the Great Wall... Wudang isn't the most stunning at first glance, but it's the easiest to stay in. Because it never overwhelms you with constant stimulation — it gently slows your pace, softens your voice, and makes you willing to sit and watch a cloud drift past the peak. This feeling is hard to capture in a photo, but it stays in your memory. If it's your first time visiting, don't rush. Give yourself at least three days. Come for Prince Slope, Purple Heaven Palace, Nanyan's cliff, Xiaoyao Valley — and all the unnamed details.

For international travelers who don't want to spend hours figuring out transport, having a local guide like A Bin makes everything easier and deeper. From pick-up to daily arrangements, you can focus entirely on the mountain, the wind, and the culture.

“It didn't change me. It just made me slow down. And sometimes, that's more than enough for a journey.”
